Question

Can not save - this file may be read only error

Hello all,

I often have the problem in Illustrator (using cc 2017)  that I can not save to the file I am working on because I get the message "this file may be read only -- another user may have it open." I have never had this problem working on a Mac but now that I work on Windows (any version, but I am working on 10 currently), I get it all the time. I have to Save as... and create version after version, which means I have to go back and delete multiple files when I am done. It goes without saying that this is an enormous waste of time and a complete drag.

Is there any solution to rid myself of this time suck?

Thanks for any help.

Erica

Search your c: drive for the file 'aiicon.dll' and rename it to 'aiicon.old'.
Do so when Illustrator is not running.
That should solve the problem, but you will lose some icon functionality in Explorer vis-à-vis Illustrator files.

Pretty sure this issue is related to Google Drive Backup & Sync.

I was having the same issue. After I read this post, I quit (not Pause) Google Backup & Sync and I was able to save the file with no error message.

It's a bit of a pain having to quit GB&S, save the file, and then restart GB&S, but it works.

The other option is to save as a new file and then delete the old one.

Are you working on your hard drive on a personal computer or are you working across a network? If you are on a network try working locally and see if the problem still occurs.

Is that a synched folder you are saving to?

    Have you checked privileges?
