Can't draw a Straight Line

I am deeply humbled to be asking this question.  Though experienced with other Adobe products, I am getting my feet wet with Illustrator.  When I use the pen tool to create two points, the elastic band attached to cursor will not detach.  I have searched for an answer to this on numerous sites, and is probably somethng so obvious, no one bothers mentioning it.  Thank you in advance for your help.

I just found this:   You can create a straight line by pressing the primary modifier anytime while drawing with the Pencil tool.

However, my pencil tool is greyed out!!

This is about Illustrator on the iPad, right? Just end a path by selecting a different tool. Ignore the rubber band.
