Can't edit shape inside shape

Hi all,

I have an object from another creators file which acts like a masked object, but cannot be unmasked. It appears to be a shape "inside" the masking shape. I've tried ungrouping and unmasking and checking if there is a compound path to no avail. Any thoughts?

it may have an effect, can you select the object and show the Layers panel expanded and the Appearance Panel?
