Can't find DPI

Hi,

 

I'm new to illustrator. I am trying to make a 20x10 graphic as well as a 10x10 graphic for a new booth for conventions. I read that I need to create it with 100 dpi... which template do I use? I don't see a DPI choice anywhere? Just points and pixels. 

 

Like I said VERY new... any help or pointers is appreciated!

Those specs are written using a common typographic error ( i.e., 100-120 DPI ).  Most large format inkjet printers use 600 DPI output resolution.  Given that, even the 100-120 PPI is a little high.  The common error ( and you see it everywhere, even here ) is DPI is output resolution, PPI is image resolution.  Your posters should be scaled to 1/4 final size.  Illustrator Raster Resolution should be set to "High" ( or 300 PPI, again even Adobe makes the error of DPI where it should be PPI ).  Images should be "Placed" and have a resolution of 300 PPI because the file will be enlarged 400% in the RIP ( or Print driver ).  Some high end Epsons may print in 1440 x 720 DPI.  That will make no diffference.  Post any other questions you may have.  My procedure is standard operating procedure.

    Okay, so what should I be choosing here? Can you tell me the presets I need? Since you're offering help I will take it lol  The creative side I can figure out fine it's the set-up I'm worried about getting wrong.

    Just how will you be outputting that?

    Send a PDF to a printer? Preferred method for vector graphics

    Convert to pixels and send a raster graphic? Better look for a printer that accepts a PDF

     

    Illustrator files don't have a resolution. You design in the dimensions you will output. But plese give us an answer to what will be sent to the printing service.

    This is what I was sent my the booth company. I  have been reading that illustrator is the  better program to use for booth graphics... is that true? Or should I be using photoshop?

    20 x 10 feet and also a 10x10 feet. So I need to scale it 1/4 of that?


    Pick up the phone and talk to the printing folks. They know their machines, they have their workflows. Some people make 1/10 of whatever dimensions they need (because easier to calculate), some people do otherwise. But in the end the files need to be processed by the printing folks and you will need to talk to them anyway (because you have to explain them how you set up that file). You don't want to have to edit what you already did because you set up unexpected dimensions or resolution.

     

    20 feet is just slightly too large for Illustrator.
