Can't get to the font properties

Hi Folks,

A completely novice user trying to learn Adobe Illustrator. I see that the forum is very active so looking for some help. Someone gave me a AI file which has a rectangle and some text written it. When I select the text using the "Selection Tool" I am able to highlight the text. However on the right hand side under "Properties" I don't see the "Character" options for the selected text. There are several texts on the page and each have been created with specific height, width and spacing from the origin, so they are all texts. Am I missing something, why I am not able to select the text get to its font properties and change\edit it?

If you are able to highlight the individual characters of net, then this should be set as text and you should be able to edit the character properties. You can hit Command T to get to the character palette outside of the properties palette, until you get sued to the properties palette.

If you cannot select the individual characters, the text might be outline to paths, set a s symbol, or linked image. You can confirm this as mentioned in the previous post, or elect and use the appearance palette to tell you more about your selection.

If you go to View > Outline mode

    How does the text show?

Are the letters black or is there a thin line araound them?
