Can't grab anchor direction points in Illustrator 2022

Can't grab anchor direction points in Illustrator 2022: I can select an anchor point with the direct selection tool, but then have to drag it slightly to see the direction handles. As soon as I let go, the direction handles disappear. How do I grab them?
