I keep up to date with adobe programs but I opened a file that gave a warning that the file had been created in a newer version of illustrator, as I thought i was up to date I checked CC and found that illustrtor wasn't in the downloaded list but underneath with an install button which is strange as i was using it. Thinking it may be a bug I re-installed illustrator but now my workspaces have disappeared and when I try to import them i get an error saying that the files don't contain valid illustrator settings

Hello @dans73382883,

We understand how frustrating it can be to not have your settings migrated when installing Illustrator. Would you mind trying to copy the Workspaces folder manually from the following locations and paste it to the exact location on your current version of Illustrator installed on your device and checking if it helps?

macOS:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator <version> Settings/en_GB/Workspaces
  • ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator <version> Settings/en_GB/Modifie

IF YOU REALLY UNDERSTOOD HOW FRUSTRATING THIS IS, YOU WOULD HAVE FIXED IT YEARS AGO.

WORKSPACES STILL DISAPPEARING OVER AND OVER AGAIN, VARIOUS APPS. NO EASY WAY TO IMPORT WORKSPACES LIKE YOU USED TO HAVE. DAMN IT ADOBE, YOUR SOFTWARE IS JUST GETTING SO INCREDIBLY BAD.

Hi there,

We understand your frustration here. You can import previously saved settings, which includes workspaces as well by following these steps:

  • Go to Edit > My Settings > Import Settings and select the file you saved earlier

Did you try that?

Regards,

Srishti

Yes, I'm doing that now BUT IT DOES NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE with Workspaces disappearing after an update, or even just randomly. The new user settings feature is simply a workaround for a problem that's been there for years. A band-aid solution and nothing more. Not good enough!

When the preferences get reset for whatever reason (when updating or crashing), then the workspaces are gone, because they are stored in the preferences file. So it's good practice to backup your preferences after you have customized them. And having a backup has always been a good idea - I've been doing this computer thing for 30 years now. Backup your stuff, no matter how far software is improved.
