Can't live trace a vector image

Apparently you can't live trace a vector image in Illustrator CS5?

Is that true or am I missing something? Trying to trace the outline of some type. I converted it to paths, but the live trace menu item is still grayed out. Tried on several computers with different versions of illustrator.

Help appreciated.

I think you can do that in Illustrator by using Offset Path, which is under Effect > Path > Offset Path.

The purpose of Image Trace (Live Trace) is make a pixel image into vector. If you already have a vector image, what do you hope to accomplish with this feature? Am I missing something?

I wanted to trace the outline of some type with a 'stand-off', where the tracing line would be a few pixels outside the border of the type. Was able to accomplish the same thing with the path offset tool. I'm used to Freehand, a strong competitor to Illustrator, which Adobe bought and killed.
