Question

Can't save as SVG

This is a recent issue I've found with Illustrator 29.3.1 on Mac Sequoia 15.3.1 with M1 chip. I have previously had no problems opening an SVG, doing a slight edit, then saving that SVG (command + S). Now I do that, but when I try to open the SVG again in Illustrator I get the errors "This SVG is Invalid. Validate it before opening.", then "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error.    [STEX]". The SVG seems to be corrupted.

I can't just export as SVG because Illustrator doesn't seem to preserve the opacity settings on my objects when exporting to SVG, and then if I try to update those in Illustrator then I run into the above issue again! I have made sure my Illustrator is up to date - it is frustrating because I have done this before on a previous Illustrator release without issue.

Hello @catriona_6674,

Would you mind confirming if Illustrator behaves this way with all files or files from a specific folder location? Also, share a sample AI/SVG file so I can check it on my end.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Anubhav M

Thanks for your reply. I have tried from within the original folder and also under Users > MyUsername > Downloads and Users > MyUsername > Documents > TestFolder with the same results. I have created some dummy data (which I am having the same issue with) and have uploaded here. I have the original SVG output from MATLAB which opens in Illustrator fine (testfig_20250303.svg) and the SVG I tried to save from the AI file (testfig_20250303_savedFromAI.svg). I have had to send you the .AI file I saved from the original SVG file separately as I couldn't seem to get it to upload on the discussion board!

All the best,

Catriona

Hello @catriona_6674,

I tried editing the SVG (testfig_20250303.svg) in Illustrator and then saving it, but I did not find any problems after reopening the file. Would you mind sharing a screen recording of your exact workflow (if possible) so I can try to replicate that with the test file on my end?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
