can't save or export AI artwork

I have 2 new artwork that I can't save or export or anything. I'm trying to close AI, but then it asks me if I want to save first so as not to loose it, but when I click save, nothing happens. One artwork is a copy of the other (copy/paste). Please help!

Please tell us your version and system.

Can you try and turn off "Save in background" in the preferences?

What exactly happens when you save? Do you just hit Cmd+S (Ctrl+S)?

And what happens then?

So just this file?

And you already copied it to a new file because it didn't save?

What's in the file? We are interested in features you used.

You can try and copy parts of it to new files and then see if it saves.

"Save in background" is in Preferences > File handling.

yes just this file.

yes i tried copying the whole thing to another file and it didn't save.

Now I have tried copying only one element at a time, and none of the elements save.

Many of these elements where from another file that saved normally.

The elements are text, squares etc from AI, JPEG and ping images and icons downloaded from stock. Just seemingly normal elements.
