Cannot select a pasted image.

Explorer ,
Sep 22, 2025 Sep 22, 2025

I have been working on a figure for a paper, and I am now having a peculiar issue with one of my pasted images. I had been able to click on the image to select it; however, once I resized it, I could no longer select it, unless I selected the corner of the bounding box. The other images can still be selected and moved, but the one image cannot be moved or selected anymore.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I suppose this is not checked in Preferences: Object Selection by Path Only

And did you check if it is locked?

Yes, I checked both. It becomes unselectable from one move to another. If I
hit undo, changing it back to the previous scale, I can select it again.
Then, I scale it down a little and it’s no longer able to be selected
unless I left click and drag through the bounding box. But even then, I
can’t left click and drag the image around.

Hello @MADPResearch,

Thanks for sharing the details. Could you also confirm the version of the OS/Illustrator installed and share a small screen recording of your exact workflow and the problem, so we can better assist you?

Hello Anubhav,

I am running Windows 11, computer specs are Threadripper 3970X 32 core processor, 256GB DDR4 RAM, AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, and the files are being worked on while stored in a 2TB NVMe drive. I'm running Illustrator CC v29.8. I have tried uploading a video, however, it says I do not have permission to add a video. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Are they linked or embedded?

Can you check the scale in the Links panel?

I can reproduce it with very small embedded images.

Hello Ton,

The image that is going wonky is a linked image. It's current scale size is 1.78%, although it is still 148x245 cm in size. They are massive (4 kilometer long drone images) orthographs that I am trying to align the geology from river valley to river valley, so the images are huge. I made them smaller in photoshop, saved them as TIFF files, then copy and pasted them into Illustrator to scale them down to their relative sizes to one another.

Thanks!

Yes, with small I mean the scale percentage. Are you sure that the files when copy/pasted are linked?

LATEST

The file that wasn't working was linked and not embeded. I did embed it, and now it's working when I scale it further. So, who knows? Something weird is happening with it.

Thanks for the help!!

Yup! That sounds exactly like what's happening! It appears that this bug has been occurring for nearly a year now. Hopefully, it will get some attention soon.
