WHy is the centre point not exactly on the corner of a square or even mid way between two corners. Is there a way to change the grid so that it is? Please see pic

Grids are aligned with the artboard, not objects. You can change the settings in the respective menus and define a ruler origin by pulling on the top left corner where the rulers converge.
