Change pen tool to bezier instead of spline?

I haven't used Illustrator in a while and I'm finding that the pen tool now is a spline tool by default rather than bezier. I can't find the option to get the bezier behavior back.  Does anyone know how to get change it? Thanks!

the pen tool is a Bézier tool. 

Did you perhaps try the Curvature tool? It looks very much like the pen tool.
