change what to trace using live trace in illustrator

Hi you all!

I'm trying to convert a screenshot of a city map into vector file. I'm using a black and white image (roads are black and the rest is white). I use the function live trace, silhouettes and want to use the result of the outline. The problem is that with tracing it always gives te outlines of the roads. because I wasn't able to find an option to trace the white areas instead of the white ones, I chose to invert the colors and use the live trace tool again. But to my complete surprise it now started to trace the white roads instead of the black areas. Is there somebody who can help me with this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Richard

Just draw two rectangles.

One of them should be slightly smaller than the traced image, the other one should be the size of the final format.

Select the two rectangles and make a compound path (please read the manual about that).

The traced result needs to be a compound path as well.

Then select all and use the Pathfinder (from the panel) Unite (the top left one in the panel)

Hi richard1991,

This is an issue related to the particular file. I would request you to please share some screenshots or video.

Also, it would be great if you share the file, we will try to sort this at our end. Would you mind sharing your file?

Hi srishtib8795206,

Thanks for your reply. This is the image I use.

this is the result of the result of the tracing (when using the silhouettes option).

In the end I want to draw a square around it, and than should the roads be open ended and connected with the square. See photo for desired result.

Thanks in advance! if you need more info, just let me know!

Regards,

Richard
