How can i enlarge the width of the field when saving a file in illustrator.

For me, the normal width is not enough, we use quite long file names.

I remember i could change it in the past, but i forgot how.

Thankx in advace.

Windows or Mac?

For Windows:

Drag the bottom right hatched corner area of the save-as window.

On Windows does that actually enlarge the "Save As:" field? On Mac the field remains one size regardless of what size the dialog is or if the dialog is expanded to show more options (CC 2015/18).

Yes:

It will stretch until you run out of display space.

I think this is what you mean...

Save As Mac.png

Then SHIFT+Click-Drag the right edge to stretch the width of the dialog/window.

I found this solution at the following site:  Resize the Large Buggy Open / Save Dialog Windows in OS X Yosemite

No, sorry. You're conflating two different operations in the article, neither one of which does anything about the size of file name field.

You can enter and use longer file names, they just won't be displayed entirely. Place the cursor into the field and you scroll forward or backward to reveal the hidden portions. No idea why Apple does this when the OS supports longer file names. I don't believe it has ever been possible to stretch the field on a Mac.

Yes, this is what i mean, making the file name field bigger so my text fit in...
i know i can scroll, but it would have been easier if my whole filename is already there 😄

Interesting! This is what the Mac does. It is a serious limitation of the Mac user interface.

Just to be clear, the scrolling is automatic as you fill the field beyond the visible capacity.

But always remember that AI uses full path names to the file so if you have a lot of levels in your save path, you could exceed the 255 character limit for that path.
