Changed stroke size but stroke remains same size

Hi, I'm new to Illustrator: no matter how much I change the size of my brush stroke, I will draw a stroke and it will remain the same width. I changed stroke to 20 pt, 60 pt, 100 pt and it still remained the exact same (very thin) width every time. I tried using the right bracket ] to change the size and same problem persists. I'm using Illustrator 26.3.1 on macOS Monterey version 12.3.1. I've attached an image where I've changed the stroke to 20 pt, 60 pt, etc and they all remain the same size.
