Closing paths drawn by the pencil tool in Illustrator CC 2017

I  upgraded to CC 2017 recently and I've noticed that the pencil tool works differently than it has in the past. It used to be you could close the path by holding down the option key while letting go of the mouse button. When I try this now, instead of closing the path, it simply adds a straight line segment. What's the new method for closing paths with the pencil tool?

I have heard many complaints from long-time Illustrator users who want the Pencil tool to work the way it used to. The best thing to do is to fill out a feature request. The Engineering team does read these, and sometimes features come back when there is enough demand.

Go to Help > Submit Bug/Feature Request...

Otherwise, these are the things you can change by double clicking.

For a distressed look on text, though, I like to add a stroke in the Appearance panel and apply a brush to the new stroke. This is just the default art brush. Try the other brushes or create your own. This may not be the look you are going for, though.

Double Click on the Pencil Tool, and Uncheck  Close paths when ends are within 15

I tried it just now, but it didn't help.

You are correct that no longer works the same in CC.

You can get the same result as before, with the extra step of dragging after you hold down option to be with the specified closed path distance as Mohammad Suggested. The max is 20.
