The client sent me CMYK PDF book cover to edit. When I open the PDF in Illustrator colors are different. How to get the right colors?

Since in PDF is one image that I need to import in Photoshop and edit, I tried to open it in Photoshop too (with import PDF) but I got the different colors again.

Can somebody help me?

Correct answer Mylenium

You need to read up on color management. The PDF pretty obviously uses a specifc color profile and just blindly opening it loses that info. No easy answers here. You have to get into the thick of it and study up.

That happened to me when I tried to drag and drop the PDF file into the Artboard. It was solved when I rather went File>Open>Choose File. Then it will give you a prompt about the color being incompatible. I selected "convert to RGB" and then the colors were correct.

If you cannot find out which profile was used for the image.

In Photoshop you can try to experiment with  Edit > Assign Profile... and turn on the Preview until the colours become as you think they should. Then save the image with the assigned profile.

I would suggest the same "trick" as Ton

Can't you ask for the original files in stead of a pdf?

Illustrator is not the right tool to edit a pdf, better use Acrobat Professional or a other pdf editor.
