Compound Path is affected by strange blocked areas.

Creating a compound path and everything works fine, except for certain letters in this logo (the StressLess part, which I didn't do). See ss1. Several of the letters have something "behind" them, but there's nothing in the file except for this. I can pick some letters individually, and it works to a degree, but then kicks in. I've checked and everything is joined so no open paths.

ss2 and 3, if I move one of the affected letters down, the blocked area is still there. But if I move it up for enough, it will dissapear.

Stumped! Any thoughts? If anything, I'll redo the Stressless part of the logo and start again. Thx!
