Continuing existing inactive paths?

After drawing lines with the Pen tool that are not closed shapes, and then pressing P to stop drawing the current path:

I want to continue drawing with the existing path though it is no longer active after pressing P. When I hover over one of the anchor points to continue drawing it shows a minus sign though it seems to enable me to continue the path. Is this the correct way of continuing an existing path?

The symbol should be a forward slash to connect

or a sideways minus sign?

Sounds great. Just like Illustrator, right? Just doesn't work.
