Corrupted text strings in EPS when opened in Adobe Illustrator 2019

Hi,

I have used Illustrator for over 20 years to open and manage/edit EPS-files.

Now some files get corrupted texts. If I first convert the EPS to pdf by rightclicking it and use Acrobat generate a pdf it looks ok. If I open the EPS in Illustrator it doesn show the text correct. Some letters becoms vectorized frames instead?! It only appears for some types.

Best regards
Daniel

There is indeed something strange with this font.

I tried to install it, but the font was not recognized by Acrobat when I tried to convert the .eps file.

Illustrator opened the eps but gave the same boxes as in your screendump.

But when I put the font in a folder named Fonts in the Illustrator application folder, the problem was gone (except for the italic font version which you did not share).

Good to hear the Illustrator Fonts folder workaround worked. I won't hurt to have the font in that folder as well as installed in the system. Illustrator will first look in that folder and other applications won't know about that location.

Thanks, creating a folder "Fonts" in the Illustrator program folder helped - the problem is that I'll have to use the font in other programs than Illustrator, and therefore must have the font installed - and then we are back to square one. It doesn't work to put the font in the \Common files\Adobe\Fonts folder either... Hmm. For now I can handle install/move/reinstall that font but it would to be nice to hear what Adobe says.

Hi Daniel,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with EPS files in Illustrator. I would request if you can share a sample EPS file, name of the font and the name of application in which the EPS was created originally.

When did you notice this for the first time? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.

All this information will help us reproduce the issue at our end and report it to Product team if required. We’re here to help, just need more info.

Regards,

Srishti

Thanks. See my first post - there are attached files. I have not made any changes on my system for a long time and it works with some other fonts. I´ll create some other sample files

I do not see a corrupted text when I open the .eps file in Illustrator.

I get a warning about missing fonts but the text is still editable when I open the file.

Install the fonts, I would suggest.

Thats the problem - when the font is installed, Illustrator generate frames instead of some glyph, see my first post attachments

Type 1 PostScript fonts (like the fonts used in the document) are not supported in recent operating systems. Try to put the fonts in a folder named Fonts in the Illustrator application folder.

Which application generated those EPS files?

Can you try and enable the missing Glyph protection in the preferences?

Which application that generate EPS is unimportant. It works sometimes with some typefaces. Maybe it isn´t a Illustrator problem but Adobe Acrobat engine reads and handle the textstrings in the EPS file correct. Why cannot Illustrator do the same?

The missing glyph protection is on by default.

Hopefully someone knows a good workaround?

Yes, it is important. EPS might be written by so many different editors and nobody can guarantee they do it correctly. Apart from that: EPS is only fully editable in Illustrator when the native AI file has been embedded by Illustrator.
