Crash upon start up

Hello,

I am having challenges with Adobe Illustrator, in the past when this happens I uninstall and reinstall the software (not the most effective use of time). Illustrator gets stuck in a crash loop normally after opening an EPS or EMF from MATLAB, by a crash loop I mean it gives me a send error report straight after opening. Any help on how to break this cycle would be greatly appreciated.

Version: Adobe Illustrator 2020 (24.1.1) installed with Creative Cloud Desktop.
Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise

Correct answer N-Deering

Is a printer connected?

If not, please set up the Windows PDF printer and try again

Thanks Monika,

My Computer has 4 physical printers connected as well as 3 virtual ones (including Windows PDF printer).

As today is now Monday for me I uninstalled and reinstalled Illustrator last night, while I would love to get a better solution than having to do this as it happens surprisingly often. I understand these problems are challenging to diagnose, so I would like to thank you once again for spending the time to help me.

Kind regards,
Nathaniel

Does it start when you just launch the application without doubleclicking a file?

Does it crash with every file or just those EPS?

Illustrator does open but I am unable to select anything before being presented with a crash report and then Illustrator closing.

Currently, I am unable to open any Illustrator file I can see the file has opened behind the crash report but I am unable to perform any actions.

Thanks for your help.

So reinstalling solved the problem?

You could try and reset the preferences instead.

The thing with the printers is that Illustrator checks on the printer everytime you open or save a file. If it can't find a printer or can't decide which one to use or pings one that isn't available, then it usually crashes. Making the PDF printer the default printer provides Illustrator with a printer that is available all the time.
