Create dot pattern around letters

Guest

Hi everyone,

A while ago I made a birth gift where I dotted around the name of the child and left the name blank (similar but nice than in the image). More dots closer to the edge of the ‘letter‘ and less to the outside. Now I want to make another one but  digital.

I know how to cut out the letters but how do you raise the amount of dots close to the edge in a random way?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a printed sample of what you're trying to create you can share?

Like this but with a word. So only cutting the letters is not enough, it needs to be arranged from each letter outwards.

Thanks!

Try making a scatter brush of your random dot pattern with the rotation set relative to path. Then assign it as a stroke to your outlined text.

Thanks for the reply. I made half the length of a letter as pattern and applied the settings you mentioned. It does however not follow the whole line but only in a few straight lines of the pattern. Hope it makes sense. Do you know how to really make it follow the path? Like multiply itself to follow?

You could use the Symbol Sprayer Tool.

  1. Make a black circle
  2. Turn it into a symbol (F8)
  3. Use the Symbol Sprayer Tool to spray a lot of dots (Adjust scrunch in the settings or go back with Symbol Scruncher Tools to cluster the dots closer together and likewise with the Symbol Shifter Tool to spread the dots apart
  4. Select the dots and expand (Object > Expand then Object > Expand -- do it twice because it's a symbol)
  5. Type the name (I would recommend all caps for simpler shapes and set the tracking so that the characters have some space between them)
  6. Convert the text to outlines (Type > Create Outlines or Shift + Ctrl + O)
  7. Place the text over the dots
  8. Select the dots and the text and use Pathfinder to Unite in the Properties panel
  9. Select the text which will have combined with any overlapping dots and either delete or set it to no fill

Thanks for the reply; I tried and it works to an extent, I would have to manually put all dots in the right distance from each other. So it doesn’t really solve the issue I think.

Thank you, I am not sure which part to use .

I managed to upload a picture to make it easier to understand what I mean. 4D4FF868 F6FA 487C A61D 2548DABD7071 - ImgShare.io
