Creating and importing AI graphics WITHOUT including the whole artboard

Hello,

I am a born-again AI user. When I used it 10-15 years ago, any file you created could be created, and without doing anything special, only the parts of the artboard that had content on them would be saved, so when you imported the file to Word, InDesign, FrameMaker, etc, you would only see the image itself.

Now, when I create a graphic and import it to FrameMaker, the entire artboard gets imported. The "content," (drawing that I created) is a tiny little part with a bunch of white space around it.

I'm sure this is a VERY elementary, bonehead question, but like I said, I'm just returning to AI after a 15 year hiatus and a lot has changed. Thank you for your help.

In Illustrator you can select your artwork and choose Object > Artboards > Fit to Selected Art

When importing the file you need to check out the options and select the PDF box that has only the artwork.

In InDesign this is possible. Don't know about FrameMaker

In FrameMaker, it's just Insert/Graphic and no questions or dialog boxes appear. Maybe I need to ask this question in the FrameMaker group.

Is there something I need to do with the Illustrator file to make it ONLY display the image and not the whole artboard?
