Creating/moving/deleting layers in a template

I'm working with a .AI template file that I want to work with to import into Character Animator. The template includes layers for different artwork that makes up each body part of the character, and I want to make my own version of each body part and then make sure my version of the body part is placed on the same layer as the one that came with the template. To do this, I am simply drawing my artwork and it places it on new layers and I am trying to click on the blue square in the layers panel and I drag it to the layer that I want to to be placed on, and I delete the original artwork that was on that layer that came with the template.

1. Is there an easier/more efficient way of doing this?

2. Why is it that when I select my simple shape, it sometimes also selects multiple layers that came with the template?

Thanks in advance!

You might try double-clicking the original artwork to enter "Isolation Mode" (or click the "Isolation Mode" icon clipboard_image_0.png).

Then delete the artwork and create your one, or paste. Exit Isolation mode with "esc" key.

This might be easier than dragging the artwork into place and deleting the original.
