Creating new document Templates in CC2017

New Here ,
Nov 03, 2016 Nov 03, 2016

I can't seem to find out how to save a document as a template to open in the new document screen panel that shows print, web etc templates. There is an option for 'saved' templates but I can't seem to work out how to actually SAVE a template?

When I go File > Save as template it saves to the blank templates folder, not the new document profiles. Is Adobe working on this or am I missing something?

Hi Auzprint Design,

To achieve this you can do the following steps :

1. Save the blank document as ai file for which you want to create the template

2. In new document dialog

3. Click on More Settings button in New document dialog

4. Click on the drop down in Profile

5. Select browse

6. Go to above created file and create new document

After doing this you will be able to find this listed in Recent tab in New Document Dialog

Thanks & Regards

Fellow creatives, lets get something straight;

1. Thank you for all of your suggestions and efforts but all of these hacks are not worth it, they can be dangerous and or only partially work (at best).

2. Adobe are only interested in making money therefore any new features are either created to totally dazzle or to have us pay for more services.

3. Our own workflow is placed absolutely last in the "Adobe Ai" list of things to do because  (a) It does not sound very exciting and (b) It will not yield much financially.

The New Document Panel/Dialog is there for us to be enticed into buying new templates* NOT for us to reach our own custom created templates. If this was the case then Adobe would have made this process much easier, instead we have to navigate through several windows in oder to reach our own templates and then we still can't save these custom templates and be quickly viewed/selected.**

Dear Adobe, I appreciate the constant re-invention of your products but I run a business and my workflow is critical to my profit, at some stage your products will require better workflow in order to cut through the added complexities of constant new features. Adobe, you are not the only one having to run a business at a profit, please look after our workflow options, thank you.

* Yes some are free for now but think down the track

** nitishagarwal123 Your solution only provides a blank document version of a custom template, any design elements that were part of the document, are not visible therefore the document is useless as a template.

Yes, they are hacks but they are not dangerous. But take it with a grain of salt. Folks who posted ideas/solutions were trying to be helpful, nothing more. It is also clear that those of us who were discussing hacks have experience doing so and are comfortable with it. If someone is not comfortable with the hacks, or do not know what they are doing, then they definitely should not use them. I have 20 years experience as a career software developer and do a lot of scripting and hacking on Illustrator so I'm totally comfortable with it.

If you botch the preferences file, the worst that will happen is you have to delete the preferences file and reset your preferences. Annoying? Yes. Dangerous? No. The most likely issue is that the hacks will get over-written the next time Adobe Illustrator is updated. You aren't (and can't) change any core code. They are simply configuration files. They get corrupted all the time.

If there is a feature you would like to see added or think something would work better another way, believe it or not Adobe _does_ care. You can write to the dev team and ask for it. I have actually had this very conversation with both the Illustrator marketing manager and the head of the Illustrator product team. They are aware that they have that reputation but it simply isn't true. Unfortunately, as a large company with, you know, deadlines to meet, it is difficult for the people who do the coding and can make decisions about these kinds of things can't interact with every customer the way some smaller software makers like Bohemian (Sketch) and Serif (Affinity Designer) can. Nothing at all against those folks. I know them as well and they are all very dedicated and care deeply about their users and their products. The illustrator team is absolutely no different in that respect. What is different is that they simply have hundreds of times more customers and can't possibly talk to everyone and include every feature request. But if you can manage to get in touch with someone who has influence, they are very open to talking, listening, and doing what they can.

I would encourage anyone who wants to see this issue addressed just get in contact with Adobe's dev team and talk to them. I think you will be very surprised to learn that they are not at all what most people seem to think. Adobe Illustrator (@Illustrator) | Twitter
