creating swatches and background fill

New Here ,

I am a fairly new user of illustrator, and I am trying to figure out if there is a way to have a background fill color with a new swatch you created.  I am trying to make simple geometric shape and duplicate it.  in the attached snippet, you can see where the background "green" color is coming through. Half my swatch is colored white whereas the gaps are see through. Is there a way around this

Try selecting your outer oval and adding a white fill to it.

So this is a pattern fill?

I don't understand what you want this to look like.
