Question

CS5 quits at launch but I can post the crach only with the main user

I have Illustrator CS5 and High Sierra. Illustrator doesn't start even from terminal. This used to happen even before upgrading to High Sierra, already in OS10. However, if I change user (e.g. use a guest account) it opens, and I guess functions OK. This is the error it gives when I start it from the terminal:

/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.30.2/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:50: Error: unsupported compressor 8

/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.30.2/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/Exceptions.plist'

/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.30.2/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:50: Error: unsupported compressor 8

/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.30.2/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/AppExceptions.bundle/Exceptions.plist'

libc++abi.dylib: terminating with uncaught exception of type std::out_of_range: basic_string::at

Abort trap: 6

I can post the crash report if useful, but it is a bit verbose...

Anyone can help ?

Thanks

Hi Domenico,

As Monika and Doug said, CS applications have been discontinued and are no longer compatible with today's operating systems(Older versions of Adobe Illustrator system requirements ). I am afraid there is very little we could do from our end as attempts to troubleshoot the install could result in it becoming unusable. We strongly recommend upgrading your software to a newer version that is supported or downgrade the operating system to Mac OS X v10.5.7 or v10.6. That way, we can provide you with tech support and access to the latest updates and bug fixes. I apologize for the frustration. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Srishti

Sorry Srishti, this is not the right attitude. Adobe should give support for the ones willing to keep the affordable CS (that they have already paid) rather than suggesting to buy the new product (the option downgrade to 10.5 is almost offensive, given that most programs do not work with it). This is simply a suggestion to use cracked programs (suggestions welcome ), or to change program (suggestion welcome for Illustrator ). I simply do not need an upgrade to CC, just want what I bought to work the way it did before, which is largely enough for my needs. CC is just a way to draw money from people by artificially inducing needs. If you want the new product you should buy it, but if you want to stick to the old one you should be able to do so. I guess I'll discontinue using Adobe products and find alternatives

It's not about attitude.

It's about technology. In order to keep CS5 running with new systems you need updates (newer systems are 64 bit, CS5 is 32 bits. It just can't run). And update is exactly what CC is. Or do you want to suggest that Adobe should keep updating CS5 parallel to CC? Then who should do the updates?

And also: you will need to pay, because there needs work to be done in order to keep it compatible.

If it works in the other user account then just use it in that user account.

In case you're not too experienced with Mac OS, uninstalling, reinstalling can only make it worse.

The short answer is that High Sierra doesn't support CS5 (or vice versa).

The long answer is that there may be folks out there who can offer help from experience, unfortunately I am not one of them. Jeff A Wright has made an effort to support those installing CS apps on 10.12 and later here:

Installing Creative Suite on a new Mac or macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or later

but I'm not sure how much that might help you. Lots of information seems to relate to installing, but John T Smith posts some collated information here:

Re: Can't open CS5 in OS-X "Sierra"

Also the thread has lots of discussion from users trying to get CS apps working that you might find a useful nugget in.
