Since the last update my cursor isn't showing the selected tool (just now I was using the pen tool, but the cursor was showing the hand tool) and was hoping this latest update I ionstalled today would fix it, but no. Restarting my computer and/or reinstalling Illustrator doens't fix it. Well, reinstalling Illustrator fixed it for about an hour, but then it went right back to it.

What version of OS & Illustrator are you using? Make sure they are compatible with each other.

Illustrator system requirements

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner to fully remove your app & prefs then reinstall, as it sounds like a corrupted pref.

Update any Illustrator plug ins.
