Custom Brushes do not save with document or library

HI, 

I am teaching an Illustrator class.  My student has made several custom brushes and they do not save with the document, nor do they save when we try to save as a User Defined Brush Library.   When we open as a saved library, it's the default brush panel with none of her brushes included.   Is there a setting that can be adjusted so her work saves?

Can you please describe the exact steps you are doing? Please name the exact commands and the versions you save your files and also what and how you open.

Hello,

adding the brush to the Brushes Panel by hitting "new brush".

We are trying to save by using "save brush library" in the Brushes Panel. When we open the file, it's defaulting back to the original brush panel with none of said brushes saved.

You open the Brush library you just saved?

Yes, we opened the brush library we saved, however none of the brushes we created were in the saved library.   It was back to the default.
