I have just downloaded the trial version of Illustrator CC and am trying to do an image trace of a photo however the custom option for Trace is greyed out and not available. Why is that and how can I make it available?

You can still save your own custom set of options and then access it in the menu if that's what you want.

It becomes custom when you customise one of the options.

Hi Ton,

Ok - I have now found how to customise the options. I was confused as in a previous version (CS5) I used to be able to access the custom settings from the menus itself.

Hi Monika,

Thank you for the reply... yes, I have now worked that out. As I was used to an older version - I am very much an amateur in Illustrator and use it minimally to create an effect with some photos - I was a bit confused with the new layout in CC.

Cheers again

Looks like you have selected an artboard instead of an image.

Just change some option, and then "Custom" will be automatically selected. You don't need to choose it from the menu.

How do you actually change the options? Even when accessed through the Object menu, I can't see how you change the settings.

Go to Window > Image trace and then change the options.

Please read the documentation

I have this same problem right now with a 1 year old mac model and latest software. it's not working like it used to. It's just greyed out and when you click one of the other presets or anything else it just automatically starts tracing it without even a second to bringing up the options dialogue like it used to.

At the bottom of the Image Trace Panel uncheck "Preview"

The panel is in Windows > Image Trace.

Please read about the feature here:

There is a video linked on the page.
