Cutting out from a complex vector/drawing to produce transparent logo

Hi there, I hope this inquiry finds you well and thank you for taking the time to read and answer.

I am currently designing an emblem, as a part of a logo exploration for one of my clients. This particular emblem is the brand's initials cut out from an illustration of a leaf surface area (which I made from image tracing a photo).

As the bottom layer is consisted of a complex vector/drawing of the leaf + applied a 'squoval' clipping mask on top, I can't figure out a way to properly cut the initials out of the drawing to achieve desired end product.

Here are a few things I've tried doing:

1. Making both the initials and the drawing into compound paths > Applying Minus Front (results can be seen as attached)

I guess in a way, I'm asking:

1. Is there a way to fully transform the clipped vector/drawing into a solid shape? a.k.a add a bounding line around the clipped vector/drawing?

2. Or I'm open to any other suggestions to help remedy this situation.

You can:

- make an opacity mask

- just color the letters white

If that is not possible, because you need paths for cutting or the like, apply a fill to the letters in a completely different color from everything else. Then select all and use the pathfinder "Merge" (from the panel). Afterwards you need to inspect the artwork and delete everything you don't need. There might also be invisible (unfill and unstroked) objects, that you need to find and delete.

Hi Monika!

Oh my goodness, what a simple solution!

The bit about changing the text fill to a completely different colour really made a difference in a logical flow 😄

Thank you so much 🙂
