Cycle through fonts and see changes in real-time?

Is there a way to cycle through the fonts for a selected text? Or do you have to manually go up in Type/Fonts and select a new font, over and over again?

Also, do I have a problem with my mouse or is it impossible to scroll through the fonts using the mouse wheel? I have to use the arrow keys at the top or bottom of the Text menu, and when the thing finally moves it does so in super slow motion. Alternatively, is it possible to open a window showing all installed fonts at once so you don't have to scroll?

Thank you.

You should be able to do this, but not in Type > Font, but instead in either the Character panel or the Control panel or the Properties panel

Thank you for your reply! I'm on the latest Illy CC and latest Win 10.

1) I type a word

2) Select it (I've also tried just placing the cursor in the text field)

3) Go to Type/Fonts...

I'm not sure why it's going super slow for you unless maybe you have a lot of fonts. I have a lot of fonts, but it runs quickly for me. I'm also on the latest version of Illustrator on a Windows 10 machine.

Here are some other ways you can see the font change for selected text:

  1. Select the text which can be done by
    1. Using the Type tool
    2. Using the Selection tool
    3. Using the Direct Selection tool
  2. Set the Font Family by
    1. Going to the Character section of the Control panel on top if you're set to the Essentials Classic workspace
    2. Clicking on Character in the Control panel if you're in the Essentials Classic workspace
    3. Going to the Character section of the Properties panel
    4. Clicking on the three dots for more options in the Character section of the Properties panel
  3. Adjust the font by
    1. Clicking in the Set Font Family field and using the up or down arrow keys to navigate up and down through the font list
    2. Clicking to open the drop down menu to
      1. Drag your mouse over the fonts
      2. Use your scroll button on your mouse to scroll through the font menu, although Illustrator only displays the font you're hovering over as you scroll
      3. Scroll through the font menu through the UI, although Illustrator only displays the font you're hovering over as you scroll

You can also use the Type menu or right click to get a menu of fonts and recent fonts, but Illustrator doesn't apply the font to your selection through the context menu. It does at least give you a sample in the menu. This list does extend from the top to the bottom of your screen as opposed to being limited to a set length that requires you to scroll. The type menu's full list will still require you to scroll if you have more fonts than what fit your screen real estate, in which case you'll use the triangle at the bottom of the list to navigate.

Thank you very much for your time and your elaborate reply! It was very helpful to get an overview of all the different ways to solve this! One of my problems was indeed that I was in the Essentials workspace and didn't think of clicking Properties.

So, I'm very happy now.

Thank you for your reply -- may I ask what the effect will be of that procedure? It sounds a little bit scary. And is it something I should do now that two users actually solved my problem?

It resets the preferences. I don't think you need to do that in your situation at all.

You can scroll through fonts now?

Thank you, I won't touch it then...

And yes, scrolling is just perfect now. This has seriously improved my life!
