differences in dxf export between Mac (Sierra) and PC

Community Beginner ,
Feb 21, 2024 Feb 21, 2024

Do PC's and Macs export dxf files differently (using the same version of illutrator (2020)  Both export files that can be read by certain dxf readers (i.e. the mac dxf file can be opened in PC dxf reader (CAD viewer programs or illustrator) but Matlab is not recognizing the mac derived dxf file, but does recognise the same file when open in, and saved from a PC.  It seems as though there are either extra or missing characters between the 2 versions (mac vs PC)  that matlab is not seeing.   Is it with the encoded scaling info?  (I have tried points, mm, inches etc). Thanks for any insight.

Hello @Nadine355954101vcf,

Thanks for reaching out. Would you mind sharing more details about the exact export settings used, sample files from both the macOS and the Windows version of Illustrator, and screenshots highlighting the trouble encountered, so we can check it on our end?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

I am answering via E-mail because of the ease of attaching files. The white header (DXF/DWG options) and black box is the PC export. The grey (DXF/DWG options) header (on the white and dk grey background) is the Mac. The dxf file is from the Mac (time difference is just getting to the point I can get the PC version from my colleague. I will send this when I receive it). The final image is the simplified line art we are trying to export to dxf and read into matlab. (Using a dxf reader). Note I do not have the details on this, only that it works with the PC exported version and not the Mac — and for the Mac version the resulting text file (converted from the dxf) is empty. The other thing I recognized is that the same mm scale (the straight line at the bottom of the blue dot and line figure) is different on the PC (16.686) and the Mac (33.4008). Note I have tried using both scaled and not scaled line weights. It did not make a difference.

From my colleague " I am using Illustrator version 27.9 (64-bit).
To open the original dxf files, I had to "Scale to Fit Artboard". Opening the file as "Original Size" and entering a scale of 20 units = 1.3125" made the restored section ~0.01" wide (total length!) and really really small in illustrator and CAD viewers. So the 16.6 mm is the length of the full scale bar in my resized sections.” The dxf version from the PC is indicated as PC

Let me know what additional information you would find helpful

Nadine

I have uploaded the files onto google drive. They can be accessed through the following link (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YxGcfakNUFEdcaXV_y3qXt_WTUT35c1U?usp=sharing)
The dxf files are indicated as PC or Mac derived as are screen shots of the export window. There is also a screen shot showing the image structure (with vertices)

Thanks for your help

Hello @Nadine355954101vcf,

Thanks for sharing the details. I was unable to access the files as the link seems to be not public. Kindly re-upload the files/change the setting, so I can check it with the team. Kindly include sample Ai and DXF files and screenshots of the settings used for both macOS and Windows.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Anubhav

I have checked the settings and anyone with the link (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YxGcfakNUFEdcaXV_y3qXt_WTUT35c1U?usp=sharing) should be allowed to access the folder. Please try again. I have attached the .ai file note that I just want to export the digitized line art from 2 of the layers (see screenshot in folder) the images one of the layers was just included for reference.

Thanks

Nadine

Hello @Nadine355954101vcf,

Sorry for the delayed response. Illustrator uses the AutoCAD library to export DXF files. Would you mind trying to replicate this with AutoCAD's own software and sharing your observations?

Also, try updating to the latest version of Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/3TBJYgI) to check if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav
