Direct Selection mishap

Okay, so I was making changes to one of my projects when I accidentally pressed the wrong key on my keyboard, and the Direct Selection tool is not showing when an object is selected. Can I have some help, please?

Is the Caps Lock key on? And is View > Bounding Box showing?

A question in addition to what Ton asked/suggested: which key (combination) were you trying to press?

Forget my Caps Lock remark, that shows a crosshair with (almost) every tool, except the selection tools.

You've probably turned off the "edges"? Use View > Show Edges.
