Divide tool having no effect

OK so I´m getting really miffed off now. Yesterday I replicated this effect no problem. Today, I get to the stage of -pathfinder-divide and I get a message saying that pathfinder effects should usually be used on groups, layers or type objects and it has no effect. PLEASE HELP!

Here´s what I´ve done so far

Create text - create outlines - ungroup - rectangle tool over text - (kept selected) object/path/split into grid

- select all - effects/pathfinder/divide

Then I get the following message

I had no problem with this 2 days ago and I´m not aware of having changed anything.

Sorry, my mistake, should have been Window > Pathfinder.

Try to use the ~~View~~ Window > Pathfinder for the Pathfinder Panel instead of the Effects.

OK great, will do thanks Tom. I used pathfinder from effects as I can't find the pathfinder panel, even though I've got it selected in the view tab. I'll find it and try that 👍
