Drag and drop images onto canvas instead of artboard

I got a new computer recently and Illustrator behaves differently when dragging and dropping images. Instead of dropping them right under my cursor, it drops it on the center of the selected artboard.

How do I revert this behavior?

Please tell us the hardware specifications and the system. Did you properly install Illustrator or did you migrate the system?

And you are dragging an image from the Finder into the document and then it just falls into the center of the document window? What kind of pointing device do you use? The trackpad?

I'm using the trackpad, but it happens with a mouse too.

I noticed it doesn't happen with dragging from the Finder, but it does happen when I drag in a screenshot from the lower right corner of the screen.

You mean those screenshots directly after making the shot when they haven't actually been saved?

This also happens when dragging and dropping an image from a browser.

It's probably caused by that fact.

You might want to report it to https://illustrator.uservoice.com

And maybe the engineers can do something about it. But maybe not, since this is a lot like copy and paste.
