Draw Inside / Paste Inside Displays An Outline Around Shape Object

As per the title.. when I paste inside an elipse for example - the shape shows an outline around the outside... very frustrating! 

 

Im new to illustrator so I'm sure its something simple or I'm doing somethign wrong but I have attached a screenshot and hope someone can point me in the right direction

The dotted line is an indication that you are working in the Draw inside mode.

To restore the default drawing mode click the Draw Normal icon at the lower left of the Toolbox.
