Drop .ai files into open document without it creating a clipping path?

So holding shift and dropping a .ai file into a currently open document in Illustrator embeds the file but also creates a clipping path layer that doesn't exist in the OG file. Is there a way to turn that off when dropping in files? It's a lot quicker to drop files in from finder than opening each, selecting all, copying and pasting.

When you drop an AI file into an AI file, you are effectively placing the PDF part of that file. THat is not the same as opening the file and then copy and pste. And also PDFs tend to have clipping paths.
