Hi, I'm trying to export my artboards in an AI file. Each artboard in the file is named (for example: icon1). When I use Export > Export for Screens and choose AI as the file type, I get a weird result with this file name: icon1_icon1.ai.
In other words, it repeats the artboard name twice in the file name. Is there any way to avoid this from happening? The prefix option in the export dialogue box has been left blank, so it's not that either.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @Ruby5EB4
I tested this on my end and was able to replicate the same behavior—when exporting artboards as AI files via Export for Screens, the artboard name appears twice in the filename (e.g., icon1_icon1.ai).
I’ll check with the product team to confirm whether this is expected behavior or if there’s a way to prevent it. I’ll update you as soon as I have more details!
Best,
Anshul Saini

Thank you! As I have over 1,000 artboards, I'd really like to find a solution instead of renaming by hand.

Hi Anshul, did you get any more info on this issue? Thanks

I don't think this is an expected behavior. I tried to export multiple formats and it duplicated the file name in "ai" and "eps" formats only, the rest png, svg and jpg was fine!

Apparantly Illustrator forces artboard name duplicate (eg. icon1_icon1.ai) back to it even though I manually edited it away.
This is how it happened for me:
1. exported artboard named icon1 to AI file => gets named icon1_icon1.ai => edit name to icon1.ai
2. open new file and place icon1.ai as embedded.
3. open embedded file, make edits, hit save => creates new file named icon1_icon1.ai instead of overwriting icon1.ai
Hope this adds to fixing the issue.

PS. it seems every time I edit original embedded file it replicates artboard name to file name. Now I icon1_icon1.ai has become icon1_icon1_icon1.ai
This does not happen with AI files created and saved through New File.. option. I can place embedded, edit originals, hit save and see them updating in the parent file no problem.
