Duplication of artboard numbers - Illustrator 28.7.1

It's Sept 25, 2024, and Adobe Illustrator 28.7.1. still has the duplicate-artboard-numbering bug. Good news: The solution I've found that still works since AI 26 of yore is to quite AI, restart machine, open the AI file of issue, and voila - the artboard numbers are in the correct sequence. Bad news: You still have to deal with it.

Hello everyone,

Our team has tried fixing this in the latest release of Illustrator 29.4. Would you mind updating to the latest version (https://adobe.ly/3ReKRuZ) to see if it helps resolve the problem?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Can you reliably reproduce the bug in a new file?

I'd be happy to. However it took me almost 4 weeks to build this AI file with over 248 artboards on it.

This issue occurs with the more intense AI files with many artboards.

Is this something you can reproduce consistently with a sample file?

I just tried a 200-page PDF and got no duplicate numbers:

For me, it's looking like the inclusion of a PDF generated via inDesign from datamerged variable data (just a simple iterating number from 9500-9699). Please see attached for a test file. I'm seeing numerous duplications throughout.
