Question

Editing ONE Instance of a Symbol - WITHOUT expanding and breaking the symbol's link.

Hi There,

I am a production artist stumped on symbols. I am trying to adjust the location and sizing of certain sumbols without those changes affecting all symbol instances. So far I have been able to select an element of the desired instance using the direct selection tool and then switching to the selection tool to make the changes needed. Is there a better way?

When you want to move parts of the symbol instance, then you have to apply the transformeffect to do that. In a dynamic symbol you can just change attributes of paths.

will transforming the symbol instance break the link to the master symbol? To clarify I would just have the incance selected and go to Objects >> Transform...?

Resizing, rotating, moving around the symbols on the art board.

Editing one instance only works with dynamic symbols only.

You might want to give us the bigger scope of what you're doing there.

These are Dynamic Symbols that I'm using. I working on production files for bathing suits. This is an area where I do not see many people utilizing symbols to accomplish completed textile products. When working with different sizes of bathing suits for mens' briefs I need to be able to edit one size's symbol instance without those changes affecting the other symbol instances in each size.
