Please check out: https://www.vektorgarten.de/outline-object-and-stroke.html

and this one or just one example: https://youtu.be/r9CW936V-1M

Roads with the same thickness all over your map sometimes just aren't sufficient. So how about creating roads with different thickness? But we still want them to share an outline, right? So how do we go about that? For details about the Appearance panel I recommend this video: ...

Outline object can e.g. put a frame around a placed photo.

That is probably what it is used for most.

On text is does the same as Convert to path. But it does so "live"

These effects are import as in-betweens. To achieve things that cannot be achieved without them. You will only recognize what they are needed for when trying it out. There is no complete tutorial about these effects.

I tried it on image as well as text.

The image disappers after applying the command.

Nothing happens to the text.

Please see video.

Please see my screenshot. That is how you need to apply Outline object.

With the text it is needed for alingment. But actually that workaround is not needed anymore in most cases, since Illustrator can align to the text on its own.

Do you see the Appearance panel in my screenshot above? That's how it needs to look there.

If you do not know how to use the Appearance panel, please watch this: https://youtu.be/zXvRbN03MzQ

Yes, I know how to use Appearance Panel. But it doesn't help. Changing staking order does nothing.

Trust me, 1 minute of video will not be sufficient.

Would you also watch 5 or even 10 minutes or would I waste my time doing that?

The outline object effect can be a little mystic. Here are some examples of using it and how to use it. Here's how to use the Appearance panel: https://youtu.be/zXvRbN03MzQ If you like nerdy stuff, then maybe you'll also enjoy this video about Pathfinder effects: https://youtu.be/u0g67CGhZTo About

Thank you so much! This was really helpful.

Turning on preview bounds in preferances was end of my frustration.

Thanks.

It would be nice to see everyone of your examples selected and accompanied with a screenshot of the appearance panel.

Your video is very blurry but I can detect that you apply the Outline Object to the image instead of to a fill on top of the image. It would have been much clearer if you had accompanied the example with the corresponding appearance panels.
