Effects problem - applying effect adds a white box around object

Hi,

Whenever I apply an effect to a shape from the effects gallery in Illustrator (say, film grain or glass), it results in a white box surrounding the shape (see attached image), which I have to then trim with a clipping mask. Is there way to simply apply an effect to a shape without that white box issue?

Thanks

Effect > Document raster effects settings. There might be a white background set up in there?
