Effects, Pt size, paint brush tool and others not working right

Hello! I just downloaded the new Illustrator after years of having Adobe Illustrator 5. I can't understand why the stroke on my curvature tool is so large even when set to less than a 1pt weight, it looks like what would have been a 20 pt weight from my last version. This may be trickier to explain, but when I try to add an effect to the drawn path the preview is super tiny and when I apply something like a scribble or grain, it completely distorts the image and is overly pixilated. I tried changing some things around in the effect gallery, but it does nothing. I'm overall really confused as to why all these tools don't seem to be working properly. Any advice?
