Encoding error when saving to svgz

Hello.  Maybe one of you can help me out here.  I'm trying to save an illustration as an .svgz file.  I keep getting this in the preview though.  That's not how the other older svgz files look in Preview, so what am I missing?

"Save as" writes old code. Use "Export for screens" instead.

Export for screens doesn't support svgz.  How can I get to that?

Maybe use a separate conversion tool.

So there's no way to generate a working .svgz out of Illustrator?

If "Save as" does not work for you, then no.

What preview is that in your screenshot? Can't you just save the file? And then does it validate?

That is on my Mac.  When I "Export As" I can see the image just fine, just like with any png or jpg.  When I "Save As" that's what it looks like.  It will still open fine in Illustrator itself.  But you can't view the svg in a browser window.  Nothing happens.  And on my Mac, instead of seeing the image I see that error warning.  I can't seem to get around it.

You can report a bug on Uservoice

And then export SVG and convert it.

I'm not familiar with Uservoice.  And what can I use to convert that will work with Illustrator's output?  So far I've tried 3 converters and I'm still having the problem.

And "export as" doesn't support svgz, only svg.

Did you try different browsers for viewing the file?

It doesn't even view directly in preview, in the folder where I'm keeping these.  When I drag it to a browser, just nothing happens.   I have other older svgzs that preview in the folders, so there is something going wrong with what I'm making now.

Uservoice is not accepting my Adobe password and will not let me post.  So, I guess that's another bug.

You have to create an account there.

Can you save working SVGs from Inkscape?

Don't rely on Apple Preview for anything.
