Envelope Distort Disappearing

I am working with the envelope distort with mesh tool and one of my envelopes just disapeared. It remains in the layers pannel but it is empty and the text that was being warped is gone. I don't recall if this happened after I reopened the file or if it happened on the spot, but I have had it happen on the spot before as I was working with it.
Why is this happening and how can I recover my work? Thanks.

This is how it appears in the layers pannel and nothing appears on the canvas.

The latest version of Illustrator has some serious issues in conjunction with envelopes. The disappearing contents is one of them that I can reproduce sometimes. The contents may reappear if you move or edit the envelope a bit, but if you expand the envelope while the contents is hidden, it gets deleted definitely.

Which version and system is it?

Was the text still live text?

Did you open the file in any other version of Illustrator?

Although: empty groups cannot exist in Illustrator.

When you go into outline mode is anything there?

And maybe: close this file and reboot the computer and try again.

Maybe even reset the preferences. (rename the folder so you can revert)
