envelope distort make with top object

I used image trace to create a silhouette of this frog. I expanded it, then divvied it up with lines like so. I then used envelope distort, make with top object to fit these expanded letterforms into the shapes. However the last shape did not work. I am pretty sure this is a single path object, since there seem to be no trace of anything extra. Would anyone know why this error is occurring?

Is the black object in front of the green text that you want to distort?

Maybe there is a stray anchor point in there. I could go into outline mode and see it there appears to be anything hidden hanging out there.
