Eraser tool making shapes

My eraser tool is making a black circle. I turned off the fill and stroke and it's still happening. Haven't seen this problem listed anywhere when I googled it. Thanks.

Ellen,

The Eraser Tool may work quite differently from what you expect, and maybe other Tools such as the Scissors Tool will be better suited.

Please show the artwork before and after erasing.

Appearance panel visible, layers panel open and objects selected.

Maybe you work with compaund path?

Maybe you work with traced image

Maybe you work with mask
