ERROR! Links Turn into "<Clip Group> -> <image>"

Hello,
I seem to be having an issue when starting a file in the cloud then saving it locally and working from there - links turn into a yellow box with clipping paths.
I have linked images in the working file (saved locally on desktop), then save and close out and When I open up the local ai file the links are broken and the link path now says "<Clip Group> -> <image>".  I have tried relinking to same imgs and location then saving, closing and reopening and links remain broken. Even relinking, saving and packaging out - they show up as some kind of clip group. The package contains links but when open the file again it shows broken (even if steps are repeated - relink -save -reopen).  Anyone else having this error? Seems to happen when file is originally created in the cloud then resaved to desktop and opened locally. I am using 26.3.1.
Going batty over here, looking for insight. Test file Images attached for reference,  Thank you!

.aic files always embed images, they don't support links with the exception of Photoshop files saved as cloud files.

except my file was never on creativecloud. Local files saved on dropbox much easier to deal with/no restrictions.

Got same problem. Same build. M1 MacMini Monterey 12.4  This has been happening for about a week. I didnt know until i closed file and went to office and reopened it on same system. This is a new file/ havent repackaged it yet, but did that before and didnt make difference. EVERYTIME I reopen it, i have to relink about 20% of the linked .png files. VERY FRUSTRATED.

Hi, I'm having the same issue. I am also working locally and using Dropbox. Did you ever find a solution? If not, think I'll try the support tomorrow.

Does it also happen when you don't save your files in your Dropbox folder?

If you save the file as a cloud file: .aic instead of .ai, linked files will be embedded.

Hello Ton, Thank you for quick feedback. I'm trying to stay away from embedding links due to the size of some of my working files. I would like to know why my links are converting to a <Clip Group> -> <image> after opening and closing the .ai file (which was a save as copy of a working .aic file). I have only seen this probablem in the last few weeks - probably when I last updated. This error is only happening to me (within my team) and I am the only one saving to the cloud first .... So I am guessing this is an error created between the two file extentions .ai and .aic ?
